People installing solar power systems with batteries on their homes, hoping to avoid the disruption of a power cut, are being told to check with the installer that the battery can provide that protection.

Your power bill is set to keep rising, in part because of how electricity distribution businesses (EDBs, also known as lines companies) are run and regulated. EDB spending is expected to be one of the biggest factors in increasing bills in New Zealand’s electricity system over the coming years, as it has been in the last few years. The Ministry of Business, Innovation & Employment (MBIE) is now asking what should change. This is a consequential energy consultation and we are encouraging you to submit to ensure the voice of the community is heard. If Government gets this wrong, your bills will be higher for decades to come. If Government gets this right, your bills could be lower. Submissions are due 5pm Friday 30 September 2026.

New Zealand spends about as much on petrol and diesel as it earns exporting concentrated milk. Mike Casey says that money leaves the country, and most of it does not have to. He runs a cherry orchard in Central Otago on 21 electric machines, and a $50,000 diesel bill became a $25,000 revenue stream before financing costs. A pinch and a punch (and a big bunch of new EVs) for the first of the month. The Rewiring gang is always pretty jazzed about the release of the new car sales numbers each month and, while the short-term stats tend to bounce around a bit, the long-term trend is clear: sales of new EVs are up by 150% year to date and sales of new petrol vehicles are down by 15% in the same period.
We sit down with Rewiring Aotearoa's Mike Casey for a wide-ranging conversation about one of the biggest costs facing New Zealanders: energy. We get into power and petrol, and ask what can politicians actually do to make your power bill and petrol bill cheaper? We talk about the practical policy changes that could make a difference, what’s getting in the way, and whether politicians are making energy more complicated than it needs to be.

For a minute there you couldn’t move for political parties pledging the path to a solar future. The Greens, Labour and National have all set out policies to make domestic installation of panels affordable, whether through cheap loans, subsidies, or a mix of both. For Act, the focus is dismantling regulatory hurdles. Across all the initiatives, you can see the fingerprints of Rewiring Aotearoa and its CEO, Mike Casey. For the last three years, the nonprofit charity has been advancing the case for a more electric New Zealand, with an emphasis on rooftop solar, making its arguments using methods ranging from data-heavy documentation to giving politicians a hoon on an electric tractor at Casey’s 100% electric cherry orchard in Central Otago.

More than 830 people came through the doors of Nelson’s first Electrify Nelson Expo on Saturday, with early feedback showing the event not only attracted strong interest – it left people better informed and ready to take action.

Last week, Labour ruled out imposing the planned increases in fuel excise tax and Road User Charges over the next three years and, today, National has also said it will delay imposing them until 2028. It’s all being done in the name of cost-of-living relief, but it’s important to make the distinction between short-term relief and enduring, structural relief. Right now it's all about the short-term.

Winter cold snaps led to the country hitting record electricity usage multiple times at the start of this month with eight of the 10 highest demand periods in history reached in the first two weeks of August. It's driven calls to speed up consumers' ability to feed back into the grid via their electric vehicles. And to pay households for cutting electricity use at peak times. Bruce Fowler from NordEast and Margaret Cooney from Octopus talk to Kathryn Ryan.
We've heard from plenty of MPs telling us about the electric machines, solar and EVs in our Political Power series. Green MP Kahurangi Carter is also mostly running on electrons, but her set-up is fairly unique. She lives in one of 14 units in the Peterborough Housing Co-op in central Christchurch.
"Wairakei in 1958 made us one of the first countries to generate power from geothermal steam. Manapōuri came online in 1972 at a scale the demand of the day did not justify. The Waikato chain, the Clutha, the Waitaki. None of it was built to just meet the load. It was built well past it, by people comfortable being wrong for a decade in the direction of too much." That’s Anna Kominik, co-chair of Growth NZ, talking about the approach we used to take when it came to investing in electricity generation following the release of a discussion document called 'Powering a Prosperous New Zealand'.
Rewiring Aotearoa supports the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority’s (EECA) levy funding proposal for 2026/27, as we see significant benefits for electricity consumers and New Zealand’s productivity from EECA’s workstreams. This is evidenced through EECA’s performance where it has met or exceeded targeted measures, which include cost and energy savings, efficiency investment and other metrics that demonstrate the value EECA’s programmes provide.

To unlock the full extent of these benefits it is important that the intended group of customers have access to these payments. This intended group is the small businesses who do not have the bargaining power to negotiate fair benefits. It excludes large customers who are already more likely to be rewarded for the benefits their injection (exports) provides. Unfortunately the preferred proposal the Electricity Authority (the Authority) has set out in this consultation will not achieve this, and will reduce benefits to customers and does not align with the Authority's statutory objectives.

The Electricity Authority should also implement changes at this time that require retailers to allow large sites to share solar across multiple co-located installation control points (ICPs, i.e. ICP aggregation), and facilitate peer to peer trading for small scale renewable generators with local sites. Rewiring Aotearoa disagrees that delaying these steps via a staged approach is in consumers best interest. Consumers should not have to wait until demand increases to unlock the benefits of their solar and battery systems or access more competitive options from retailers. The EA has the ability to take a leadership role in the energy transition on behalf of electricity consumers. Far more than the Commerce Commission’s oversight of EDBs investment plans, the EA’s network pricing workplan gives consumers agency in the development of the electricity system.
