Taranaki Daily News' Catherine Groenestein tells the story of her solar journey: "Every day this week, the gorgeous late autumn sunshine has felt like a double blessing. As well as the sense of wellbeing a sunny day brings, it's boosting our financial health too, because since May 6, we've been harvesting solar energy off our roof. With the fervour of a religious convert or reformed smoker, I'm regularly checking the clever app on my phone to see how those panels are performing. Our solar journey began late last year when I interviewed electrification advocate Mike Casey from Rewiring Aotearoa, around the time an email arrived announcing yet another price hike from the gas company. Partway through the conversation for a story (the convincing case for electrifying your life) about the financial benefits of rooftop solar, I was convinced. To get my husband Phil on board, I bought us tickets to Sustainable Taranaki's Electrify Your Whare session, where Casey was guest speaker and we learned about how it works."

Contact's grid-scale battery at Glenbrook is switched on and the Prime Minister talks again about 'energy independence' at the opening; how steel mills and smelters here and overseas are embracing electrons; the electric wave is a massive job creation opportunity (while imported oil does bugger all on that front) and renewable projects are set to keep New South Wales out of recession; batteries have all but displaced gas for peaks in Queensland in just a couple of years, and solar and wind overtake gas for the first time globally; data shows sales of internal combustion cars peaked in 2017 but sales of EVs more than doubled between 2022 -2025; and anyone with a heat pump is making a killing.
Nick is joined in the studio by Rewiring Aotearoa CE Mike Casey, the company aims to electrify NZ. The government announced yesterday they would fund a $1.2 billion loan scheme to help large businesses transfer away from gas to renewable energy. Casey is calling for this to expand to everyday people - households and small businesses. He shares his own experience electrifying his own orchard. Casey says NZ will not have enough gas by 2032 and it is imperative to move to electric.

A proposal to let people install solar panels and other green technology using low-interest loans from their council needs to go ahead "as soon as possible", its proponents say. The government asked Local Government New Zealand to present its business case for the proposed Ratepayer Assistance Scheme (RAS) in late 2025. However, ministers still had not made any decisions about whether to go ahead with the scheme - which would let councils provide long-term loans to any homeowner who wanted to access them. That's despite growing political support from parties across the spectrum.

We’ve seen a few of our electric communities plug in to their EVs at small events and that's great to see, but Hamish Roberge from Tom Tom Productions in Queenstown has developed a solution that can be rolled out for bigger gigs. Roberge is currently on the job delivering the third Electrify Queenstown conference and it was during last year's conference that he was inspired to create NRG Event Batteries.

In The Post last week, Community Energy Taranaki co-founder Steve Francis urged "people to quiz their local candidates" about the Ratepayer Assistance Scheme and why it was still in front of the Government. "Francis said the ratepayer scheme would benefit many households who could not afford the upfront cost [the biggest barrier] or access bank finance [green loans are only available to around 20% of the population]." Putting 'downward pressure on prices' has done, to use a technical term, jack shit. And spending over $500 million on the winter energy payment to help people deal with those rising prices is a false economy. It's time for an actual reduction in energy bills and the RAS enables it. So wherever you are in the country, ask your MP why you're still waiting.

The OECD has just released its 2026 report on New Zealand's economy. And when it comes to energy, it basically gave us a 'must try harder' grade. On the proposed LNG terminal - which, remarkably, is still not dead yet despite all evidence suggesting it should be - the OECD said, as we have said, that it would not serve its intended function of lowering prices.
We're all for getting schools off the diesel and onto electrons - and we're also big fans of solar on schools. In Christchurch, Hornby High School has done just that and its system currently ranks as the biggest of any school in New Zealand.

"In its annual economic survey of New Zealand released last week, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) warned many of the Government’s energy policies were unlikely to achieve their desired effect. While the criticism of the planned liquefied natural gas (LNG) import terminal garnered headlines, the analysts urged for a far greater rethink of the electricity system, saying any reliance on long-term fossil fuel use was imprudent."
Last week we had an off-grid MP as part of our Political Power series. That was pretty rare, but this week we've got something even rarer: an MP who's flown an electric airplane. Before he became the National MP for Ōtaki, Tim Costley MP was a helicopter pilot and spent 23 years in the Air Force. He flew in an electric aircraft a couple of years ago as it was travelling around New Zealand and "it was phenomenal".

RNZ covers the Government announcement about solar installs and talks to solar installer Tim Dudek, who talks about how long it currently takes, massive growth in demand, the potential for plug-in solar and the need for low-interest finance. "I would say an installation takes between a month and two months from whoa to go. There are a couple of tickboxes that need to be done with the various lines companies and retailers, electricians and inspectors, but it's just part of any electrical job, no different to a switchboard or a heat pump installation." That's what this review could improve.
