Hey Chris!*

You want to win the election, right?

You want to win the election, right?

*Luxon or Hipkins, either will do.

Let’s face it. Your poll numbers aren’t looking great and you’re going to need to pull out all the stops. So where’s your electric vehicle policy?

Almost 70%

of New Zealanders said long-term solutions to energy and transport costs would be a critical factor in their vote and well over half of your supporters wanted Government incentives to help individuals and businesses get into EVs (Talbot Mills for Rewiring Aotearoa and 350 Aotearoa).

It’s good to see you backing our policy and offering long-term, low-interest loans for solar, batteries and electric upgrades. But petrol and diesel are near record highs and these spiralling costs are hurting households and the economy.

We’ve spent an extra $2 billion on fuel imports this year (and a lot more than that at the pump) and Statistics NZ said petrol “was the largest upward contributor to the annual inflation rate”. Every EV - big or small - on the road fights against that ‘imported inflation’. And if you incentivise electrification, the dividends will far exceed the investments. So give the people what they want - and the country what it needs.

This election is all about the cost of living and EVs offer one of the biggest cost of living wins for households. You can give New Zealanders a pay rise they can drive with the EV Salary Boost policy. It’s based on similar schemes in the UK and Australia and will help more working New Zealanders cut their transport costs permanently while reducing emissions and enabling us to run on New Zealand-made energy.

Where's the EV policy?

A week is a long time in politics. If you’re looking for a Hail Mary, this is it.
