WM New Zealand began exploring EVs in 2015 after identifying that around 75% of operational carbon emissions came from their diesel collections fleet.

At the time there were very few electric heavy vehicle options in NZ, so they looked internationally and built capability in-house. Waste collection was a strong fit for EV technology — stop-start routes and return to base daily.

  1. Start where EVs fit best — predictable routes, stop-start, return to base. Start small with pilots.
  2. Bring operational teams on the journey early — they spot opportunities and challenges first.
  3. Take a long-term view on costs — full life-of-vehicle, not just purchase price.
